History of Quilling

Quilling, an art form of coiling, shaping and arranging paper strips to create 3-D designs, was originated in ancient Egypt, when quills, or bird’s feathers, were used to coil the strips of paper to resemble metal filigree.  During the Renaissance, French and Italian nuns coiled gold-gilded paper remnants trimmed from books to decorate religious reliquaries. In later years, quilling became popular from Europe to the Americas where young ladies of leisure practiced the art to adorn cherished objects like jewelry boxes, ladies’ purses, tea caddies and baskets. Today, quilling can be found in art galleries across continents and is seeing a resurgence in popularity, practiced around the world and loved by people of every age and background.
